Why is Ventnor Botanic Garden playground closed?
Our team set out earlier this month (April 2022) on our playground upgrade project. The aim being, to improve and upgrade our current play equipment, while also installing new, natural play structures.
We were incredibly lucky to be supported by volunteers from the Friends of Ventnor Botanic Garden. Along with our volunteers, our garden team worked on cleaning the older play equipment, preparing for the framework to be repainted.
During this process, our team discovered a number of issues that raised safety concerns for those using the play equipment. We took the decision to prolong the closure of the playground while we assessed the situation.
Sadly, upon further inspection of the main play frame and the two sets of swings, we found a number of issues that will require fixing ahead of the playground being reopened. The decision to keep the playground closed, especially over Easter weekend, wasn’t an easy one to make. However, the safety of all our visitors is of paramount importance.
We do ask that visitors please refrain from entering the playground – We have installed fencing and signage to warn of the dangers. However, we have noticed some have chosen to continue using the playground.
We’re also working on the ‘Bumpy Slide’ Click here to find out what’s happening.
Safety issues – Danger of injury!
- Loose rust & sharp metal edges.
- Broken wooden ladder rungs.
- Loose floor panels.
- Rusted bolts & loose joints.
With these safety issues, of course, we are concerned about the potential of injury to our youngest visitors… Therefore, the playground will remain closed until we’ve been able to contract a team to repair the issues found.
We do of course apologise for any inconvenience caused by the playground being closed.
Stay tuned, we’ll update you as the playground project continues.
